After the success of the “Return of the King – Steven Gerrard” article, I have been inundated by requests to create a series of follow-ups. It seems that people are hungry for players who could provide an alternative to the “blueprint” players. Even the most stalwart FPL managers are beginning to tire of seeing these same players dominating teams. Felliani, Mata, Michu, Walcott, Bale, Van Persie and Suarez are now owned by so many active players that you will see 5 or more of these players in the same active team more often than not.

With this in mind, I am delighted to announce a new regular feature called “Burning the Blueprint” here on FPL Strategist. Each week, I will take a look at a player who could provide an excellent differential over the next 4-5 game weeks. As a FPL player myself, I am not a fan of short term transfers. I like to bring in players that have good form combined with a favourable run of fixtures.

Now, a word of warning! There are certain players that almost NEED to be in your team if you want to succeed at FPL. The likes of Robin Van Persie, Michu and Mata are proving every week that the are capable of scoring highly regardless of the opposition and there is no point in transferring them out for any player that might appear in these Burning the Blueprint articles. Players listed in these articles are meant to supplement these players, not replace them. The Steven Gerrard article has shown that players can be household names but can still make a superb differential, but I will also be highlighting players who may have passed unnoticed so far. As a reader told me recently, he had not even heard of Angelo Henriquez until I highlighted him in my recent African Cup of Nations review, and sure enough, he scored in gameweek 23!

So let’s see if we can find a few players that will give you that little advantage over your rivals! Check back tomorrow evening to see which player has been selected for the first “Burning the Blueprint” article!

Africa Cup of Nations

Posted: January 9, 2013 in Uncategorized

I know what you are thinking…”didn’t we have an African Cup of Nations (ACON) last year too?”. You’d be correct in your assessment…from this year onwards, the ACON is moving to odd years (2013, 2015, 2017 etc) so that it does not clash with the FIFA World Cup. While this is undoubtedly a treat for football fans, it serves up a recurrence of a headache that laid out a number of Premier league Managers only 12 months ago.

While there are always last-minute call-ups before the tournament, here is a list of the Premier League clubs who are set to be without some of their African players. The potential impact of losing these players is examined and the players who gain to benefit are highlighted.

The Red Pill

“I know what you’re thinking, ’cause right now I’m thinking the same thing. … been thinking it ever since I got here: Why oh why didn’t I take the BLUE pill?” – Cypher, The Matrix, 1999

Do you remember the day? The day when football changed for you? The day you made a decision that couldn’t be reversed? For me, it was a Tuesday (kudos to anyone who gets the video game-based reference). I was out at my local for a few drinks with a friend and his work mates in order to watch a Champions League game. As half time approached, two of the lads started to talk about one of the more boring Premier League games at the weekend. They were using phrases like “captain choice”, “assists” and “absolutely useless tool”. I asked them what they were talking about to which they replied…

“Oh it’s a fantasy football game based on the English Premier League…it’s a great laugh!”

A game…
